A functional translator for Rapa Nui, the Indigenous language spoken on Easter Island, has been developed.

Future plans include expanding the model to support other Indigenous languages for use in virtual public service tools and personalized educational platforms.

Officials emphasized that Latam-GPT is not intended to compete with consumer AI tools like ChatGPT but will serve as the core technology for developing region-specific AI applications, including chatbots and virtual assistants.

Open-Source Model Backed by Public and Private Sectors

Latam-GPT is being trained using the Llama 3 AI architecture on a decentralized network of regional computing resources. These include systems at Chile’s University of Tarapaca and cloud services supported by Amazon Web Services.

Although it currently lacks a dedicated budget, the project has received backing from the regional development bank CAF. CENIA director Alvaro Soto remains optimistic that showcasing the model’s practical applications will help attract further investment.

With its official launch planned for September 2025, Latam-GPT represents a significant step toward making AI more inclusive and accessible in Latin America.

ISLAMABAD: A major collaborative initiative is underway across Latin America as twelve countries prepare to launch Latam-GPT, the region’s first homegrown artificial intelligence language model, this September.
